Official: Yelp comes to BMW ConnectedDrive
Filed under: Technology, BMW, Infotainment
In-car point-of-interest and Google searches are all well and good, but it's hard to decipher what restaurants, bars and other local businesses are worth your hard-earned bucks while you're on the go. Yelp for BMW ConnectedDrive solves that problem.
Whatever your view of Yelp is (and there are many), the crowd-sourced business rating site is still the go-to source for many looking for up-to-date, relevant rankings of what's nearby. And with the latest update from BMW Online, drivers of most 2009 and later models can benefit from the service.
Additionally, you can email business listings to yourself or a friend, and BMW's infotainment system can also read off the three latest reviews so you won't be staring at the screen while trying to find a suitable sushi joint. Make the jump for the official details and a list of vehicles included in the update.

Video: Stuntbusters teaches us how to blow up a car in spectacular fashion
When it comes to blowing up cars, the boys (and girl) from Mythbusters are starting to get some serious competition from the Stuntbusters crew. While Discovery's myth-busting show bases its explosions around some sort of crazy science experiment, its competitor from Speed seems simply content with fireballs and bombs just for the sake of good television.
Just so long as Stuntbusters keeps its auto explosions to old, unwanted machines like the much unloved Chevrolet Corsica and the never-going-to-be-collectible Mazda 929, as seen in the video after the break, we're okay with wonton destruction in the name of entertainment.
Check out the video past the jump, where you'll learn the proper ingredients for a couple types of bombs; one powered by gasoline and one with a fiery mixture of moth balls and black powder. You are interested, aren't you? See the conflagration in all its glory after the break.

Report: Ferrari president Montezemolo to run for Italian Prime Minister
Filed under: Europe, Government/Legal, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Ferrari
There have always been rumors surrounding Ferrari. But most of those rumors have revolved around its road cars, if not its Formula One operations: that the company is planning to build this type of car or that, that the team is planning to hire this driver or that one. But this one rumor that has only grown with time revolves around the company's affable chairman, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo.
A member of Italy's hereditary aristocracy and a lawyer by profession, Montezemolo was a prodigy of both Enzo Ferrari and former Fiat chairman Gianni Agnelli and quickly rose up the ranks in the both companies to preside over each. He's also chaired influential industrial groups and coordinated the World Cup when it was held in Italy, to say nothing of the America's Cup sailing team and high-speed rail company he's run. But his latest move could elevate him to an even more central role.
Montezemolo has for years been linked to a potential run for the premiership of Italy, and fresh reports out of Europe suggest that moment is finally approaching. In 2009, he formed a center-left think tank called Italia Futura, which could, the pundits predict, be rapidly turned into a political party that may place Montezemolo as its candidate for prime minister. In that role, he'd succeed Silvio Berlusconi - the embattled, right-leaning former prime minister with whom Montezemolo has long been at odds - and the economist Mario Monti who took his place as caretaker just last month.
Elections are currently scheduled for 2013, and if Montezemolo manages to mobilize Italia Futura's 40,000 members, he could soon be changing his job description to that of the highest office in the land.

Report: Big Cheese: Kraft pushing for 97,000-pound "bridge wrecker" trucks
Filed under: Government/Legal, Safety
Kraft Foods wants to bring you more Velveeta, more efficiently. According to Bloomberg, the food giant says it needs to pack its 97,000-pound trucks full of processed deliciousness in order to combat high diesel prices. Problem is, interstate highways have an 80,000-pound weight limit.
But Kraft (along with other big corporations like Home Depot, MillerCoors, and Archer-Daniels-Midland) thinks it can get the law changed. Congress just extended a one-year pilot program to allow 100,000-pound trucks on interstates in Maine and Vermont for an additional 20 years, and a new bill would let every state decide whether they would allow the heavier trucks on their interstate highways.
Advocates of the "Safe and Efficient Transportation Act" say that the proposal is an economic necessity, and point out that states are already allowing heavier trucks to travel their secondary roads. But others have raised concerns about increased wear-and-tear on roads, and the questionable state of repair of the nation's interstate bridges, which were only designed for 80,000-pound trucks, according to the report.
There's also the potential for more highway fatalities. Though highway deaths have been on the decline, commercial truck-related deaths were up last year, according to the report. John Lannen, executive director of The Truck Safety Coalition, told Bloomberg that if the weight limits go up, "The entire country's motoring public will be put in grave danger."
