Spy Shots: Skoda's popular Yeti headed for a facelift

Skoda Yeti spy shot - front three-quarter view, white

One of our favorite European runabouts is officially due for an update. Skoda designers and engineers are hard at work refreshing the company's Yeti, and our spy photographers spotted the updated vehicle out for testing. A new front fascia looks to be part of the package, complete with larger air inlets and a redesigned grille similar to what we've seen on the Skoda Rapid. Designers have also reworked the small crossover's headlights up front, while the rear now wears new taillamp arrays and and fresh valance. None of the changes are Earth-moving by any means, but they should help keep the well-received Yeti competitive until the next-generation comes along.

So far, there's no solid word on exactly what engine options Skoda will put under the hood, though with a range of fresh powerplants behind a number of the company's other models, the manufacturer could easily spruce up the option sheet.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan driver Sato dived to the inside of Franchitti's Ganassi Dallara-Honda going into Turn 1 as they began lap 200 on Sunday, but the pair made contact and Sato spun into the wall. After Franchitti went on to secure his third win in IndyCar's most famous event, Sato argued that the Scot had not given him sufficient room

The List: The List #0051: Build a Car

Building your own car is another activity that viewers often request we cover on The List. Assembling a kit car or doing a ground-up restoration of a relic barn find seemed like obvious choices, but weren't very practical. So we donned our thinking caps and came up with a cool alternative to the normal concept of building your own car: assembling your own Local Motors Rally Fighter at the company's micro factory near Phoenix, Arizona.

Building your own Rally Fighter is part of the purchase price when you order one of these crowd-sourced off-road coupes from Local Motors. For $74,900 you get the vehicle along with the experience of helping them build it, as well as your accommodations and meals.

We've driven the Rally Fighter before
, but haven't taken you behind the scenes like this to see what the process of buying one is like and how they're built. Jessi and Patrick are going to do that for us, so hit Play to see what this updated notion of building your own car is really like.

Grosjean ready to grab victory chance

Romain Grosjean says he is ready to make the most of any opportunity he has to win this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix, after emerging as one of the main contenders for victory. The Frenchman's Lotus team has been singled out by Jenson Button as the outfit to beat in Monaco, following some impressive speed in opening practice on Thursday. And although the Enstone-based outfit has missed earlier chances to win this season, Grosjean knows he has to be prepared to do what it takes if there is a chance this time out.

Raikkonen’s form a surprise – Prost

Alain Prost has admitted that he has been surprised by the strong form that Kimi Raikkonen has shown on his return to Formula 1 this year. Raikkonen decided on an F1 comeback this season after two years with mixed results in the World Rally Championship - and has already produced two podium finishes. But it is not just Raikkonen's speed that has left Prost impressed, because the Frenchman also likes the way the 2007 title winner approaches his job, and does not pretend to like aspects of being an F1 driver that he dislikes.

Official: Audi reinvents the rearview mirror for its Le Mans racers

Audi R18 rear-view camera system

Every year at every auto show we see concept cars that envision replacing the rearview mirrors with digital cameras. They're usually the exterior mirrors and not the central one above the windshield, but whatever the case, and however much sense they seem to make, government regulations prevent them from being put into production. But Audi has found another use for the idea: its racing cars.

The latest R18 Le Mans prototype features, among other more considerable advancements, an AMOLED screen in the closed cockpit that's hooked up to a video camera, housed in carbon fiber and protruding ever so slightly from the tail fin. The system allows the drivers - who are put under enormous strain over the course of an endurance race - to clearly see the traffic coming up behind (or that they've just passed), which is apparently of great benefit considering that these mid-engined, closed-cockpit LMPs have no room for a rear window through which a conventional mirror would peer.

While they were at it, Audi moved the gear indicator, some warning lights and the tire slip gauge to the high-mounted central display. The side mirrors are still there on the outside, so the system doesn't eliminate that drag (for now), but it operates independent of the sight-limiting vibrations that can occur at the high speeds an LMP can reach, and of the weather conditions that can cause reduced visibility from spray in the wet.

Though it may take some time, if Audi wins on Sunday, it could end up selling this technology in its road cars on Monday.

Boost levels unchanged for Indy 500

IndyCar has confirmed that it will not change the boost levels for this weekend's Indy 500 for what it describes as "competition and safety" reasons. The series mandates a boost level of 130 kilopascals for Superspeedway events, although it added an additional 10 kPa for Fast Friday and both days of qualifying last week, resulting in an estimated 40-50 extra horsepower and speeds of more than 226mph

Why Are Gas Prices Going Up When Demand Is Going Down?

The price of crude oil—and more importantly, gasoline—has climbed to painful levels once again. As of early April, the quote for Brent crude, the international yardstick, was about $126 per barrel—only some $16 below the $142 peak seen in the summer of 2008. But domestic West Texas Intermediate crude is only getting $107 per barrel—a [...]

Report: Nissan confirms next-gen Rogue will be built in Tennessee

Nissan is in the process of overhauling five of its most popular models, beginning with the 2013 Altima that just went into production at the automaker's Smyrna, Tennessee facility. Next up is the all-new Pathfinder, which made its debut in Detroit earlier this year, and now Kicking Tires reports that the smaller Rogue crossover will be the next vehicle to get a much-needed freshening.

Unlike the current model, the next-generation Rogue will be built in the United States, specifically in - you guessed it - Tennessee. That aside, we don't know much else about the next Rogue, though Nissan's Hi-Cross concept from the 2012 Geneva Motor Show (pictured) certainly gives us a good glimpse as to what's possible, at least in terms of design.

The Hi-Cross, a seven-seat crossover, featured a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine coupled to a hybrid powertrain and a continuously variable transmission. It's hard to say if this sort of powertrain will find its way into the new Rogue, though. Rumors had circulated for quite some time about the new Altima using a four-cylinder turbo setup, but the production car makes due with refreshed versions of the existing four- and six-cylinder engines.

Lorenzo unhappy with second row

Jorge Lorenzo admits he is not happy to have qualified on the second row for MotoGP's French Grand Prix, but says victory is still not beyond his reach. Having qualified on pole for the opening two races in 2012, the Spaniard has now missed out on the front row in the past two straights races - the first time he has done so since June last year. Lorenzo said Andrea Dovizioso's pace on board the satellite Tech 3 Yamaha meant the front row was not possible, even if he had the potential to push harder and find time in the difficult conditions.

Official: Edo Competition squeezes 600 HP into Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Estate

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Estate by Edo Competition

If you need to haul some stuff in a big hurry, you could do a lot worse than the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Estate wagon. It offers all the power of its coupe and sedan siblings, only with the added cargo space that so many European customers prefer over the betrunked versions. But if the stock 457 horsepower isn't enough, the good folks over at Edo Competition are glad to help out with an upgrade of their own.

That upgrade, it turns out, is anything but negligible, pumping output up by nearly 150 horsepower to a stonking 600. Torque has also been boosted from 442 lb-ft stock to 501, where that extra single measure of twist makes all the difference.

The boost comes courtesy of new exhaust, headers, cats and filters, supplemented by 19-inch modular alloys riding on suitably low-profile Michelin rubber, with a slew of interior enhancements to make the Edo C63 feel all the more special.

The exterior, however, remains decidedly low-key - all the better for messing with the head of Porsche drivers on the Autobahn while hauling the whole family and all their gear. Check it out in the press release below and the high-res image gallery above.
