Track worries curtail IndyCar practice

IndyCar was forced to abandon its first practice session in Baltimore due to safety concerns over bumps on the track. Several drivers were launched completely airborne when they tried to navigate a bump just before the railway line that crosses the start/finish straight, prompting the series to end the session 25 minutes early to discuss possible solutions with the drivers.

Rivals say Alonso is no underdog

Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton do not believe Ferrari is truly an underdog in the 2012 Formula 1 title battle and reckon Fernando Alonso's car is now a match for his main rivals'. Despite holding a 40-point world championship lead , Alonso insists that Ferrari is the "slowest" of the top teams . But Red Bull driver Vettel argued that Alonso could not hold such a commanding points lead if his car was not up to the task.

Report: GM bans political candidates from plants until after Election Day

President Obama at car factory

Looking to avoid becoming a lightning rod for the Presidential race, General Motors is asking the candidates not to tour its plants until after Election Day. Ever since its bankruptcy in 2009 where it received billions of taxpayer dollars, GM has been used as leverage by both sides of the political aisle, but the automaker is hoping that by eliminating the presidential and presidential-hopeful photo ops, it can distance itself a little more from the negative "Government Motors" label.

An article in the Detroit Free Press says that the auto bailout is expected to play a big role at the Democratic National Convention next month, and GM is still a key topic in this discussion as it is still 32 percent owned by the U.S. Treasury Department. GM has paid back $23 billion of the loans so far. Proof of GM's unwilling involvement in politics is evident by Vice President's recent quote stating: "Osama bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive."

The efforts of the GM's bailout/bankruptcy recovery are still just as mixed as the issue was back in 2009. The automaker has seen big profits so far this year - $3.66 billion - and its credit rating was upgraded by Fitch Ratings, but its stocks are down 35.8 percent since 2010 meaning that the government's current investment in GM would be a loss of $15.6 billion if sold now.

In addition to GM, the article also states that the Chrysler Group is closing its doors to the politicians until after November 6. Unlike GM, Fiat-controlled Chrysler has fully repaid its government loans.

Paul di Resta believes Force India has the potential to deliver some 'big' results in the second half of the season, as it bids to overhaul Williams and Sauber. Isaac Mizrahi in the Chevy Malibu

If we didn't know that this news came from AdWeek we'd think it came from The Onion. Fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, previously connected to everything from Bergdorf Goodman and Liz Claiborne to QVC and "Project Runway," is throwing his name behind the Chevy Malibu.

You see, General Motors, attempting to "put a stake in the ground and commit to the growing women's segment" with the Malibu, of all things, has tapped Mizrahi to assist.

How will he do this? By creating a clothing line called Malibu Style, "inspired by the new Malibu," that will be sold exclusively on the daily deal site Living Social. Mizrahi says the line is to "celebrate a new approach to everyday style" that appeals to smart women who have their own personal flair. Speaking of his devotion to color, which he calls "the most important luxury in a woman's life," Mizrahi said, "One of the things I was inspired by was a blue light that emanates from the dashboard. It's just sexy." That is an actual quote.

The campaign will be aided and abetted by a Facebook page and a series of 50 videos featuring Mizrahi driving a Malibu in cosmopolitan cities that are home to smart, fabulous women. We've posted the launch video below.

Magny-Cours hopes test aids GP chance

Magny-Cours chiefs hope the forthcoming young driver test at the venue will help boost its chances of winning the French Grand Prix back. As AUTOSPORT revealed earlier, the circuit is to play host to the second of this year's young driver tests with Ferrari, Mercedes and Force India all due to run in the week after the Italian GP in September. And on the back of extensive upgrades that have been made to the track since it last hosted an F1 race in 2008, circuit bosses believe that having grand prix machinery running at the venue is important.

Maybach 62 - two tone paint - front three-quarter view

It happens every year. We bid adieu to some cars and trucks that will be missed, and say good riddance to others wondering how they stayed around so long. Whether they're being killed off for slow sales or due to a new product coming along to replace them, the list of vehicles being discontinued after 2012 is surprisingly long and diverse.

CNN Money has compiled a list of departing vehicles, to which we've added a few more of our own. In the slow sales column, cars like the Lexus HS 250h, Mercedes-Benz R-Class and the full Maybach lineup appear, while the Ford Escape Hybrid, Mazda CX-7 and Hyundai Veracruz are all having their gaps filled with more modern and more fuel-efficient alternatives. Obvious exceptions to the rule include models that still sell in decent numbers like the Jeep Liberty and the Chrysler Town & Country (which will eventually be replaced by a crossover-like vehicle).

Check out our gallery of discontinued cars above, then scroll down for more information.

Report: Ailing Peugeot may get boot from French stock exchange's benchmark CAC 40 index

Peugeot lion emblem on sheetmetal

The clouds that have been darkening the forecast for Peugeot just keep getting darker. The latest storm front involves the risk of being delisted from the CAC 40, the benchmark index composed of the 40 companies with the "most significant values" among the the companies with the top 100 market capitalizations listed on Euronext Paris (the French stock market). The blow wouldn't just hit Peugeot's prestige, but it's stock price, too - and that has already sunk so low in the five months since General Motors bought into Peugeot that GM is looking at taking a €174 million ($215M U.S.) charge.

Peugeot's market-cap of 2.4 billion euros - roughly $3B U.S. - is 77th out of the top 100 companies on Euronext by valuation. That's where the phrase "most significant values" comes in; even though it's already well outside the numeric cutoff, the selection committee for the CAC 40 has discretion and Peugeot is a marquee French company. This is also where politics come in - cutting Peugeot from the top ranks, even if only in name, especially with speculation that the carmaker would be replaced by a Belgian chemical company, would hurt far beyond the company walls.

A meeting of the selecting committee is expected to take place the first week of September, and analysts believe that, short of "an exceptionally 'political decision,'" Peugeot will find itself outside the club. In that case, analysts expect further selling pressure on Peugeot stock to the tune of seven million shares, which would force the its price even lower. The sooner the automaker can get the French government behind its plan to cut its overcapacity in factories and plant personnel, the sooner it can begin to put a stop to the gloom.

Ailing Peugeot may get boot from French stock exchange's benchmark CAC 40 index originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 08:29:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Analysis: Williams most improved team

Williams is the Formula 1 season's most improved team, based upon a comparison of points scored in 2012 so far relative to last year. AUTOSPORT's comparison shows that Williams, which returned to winning ways for the first time since 2004 at the Spanish Grand Prix in May, has achieved 1325 per cent of its 2011 points tally this year. Inevitably, this type of comparison favours teams that underachieved last year, meaning that the Lotus team, which competed as Renault last year, is second in AUTOSPORT's ranking at 290 per cent

Juncadella apologises for start clash

Daniel Juncadella has apologised to Felix Rosenqvist for causing the accident at the start of Sunday's Formula 3 Euro Series race at the Nurburgring that put the Swede into the barriers at high speed. From pole position, Prema Powerteam driver Juncadella moved across to the right at the start to cut off the advancing Mucke Motorsport car of Rosenqvist; forcing his rival to use the pit exit to avoid the grass.

2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed - front three-quarter studio view, blue

First we found out about it, then we saw it at Pebble Beach, and now we've got the full skinny on the 2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed. There's more to the crown prince king of the Continental GT range than its 616 horsepower, 590 pound-feed, eight-speed transmission, 205-mph top speed and four-second run from zero to 60.

The W12 engine has been fitted with an energy recuperation system that optimizes the use of the electrical system and alternator - during deceleration, for instance, energy is stored for use later. It's a feature that has spread to all members of the GT line along with the eight-speed transmission, and combined with new engine management software, the result is an improvement of up to 12 percent in fuel economy for all but the GTC droptop, which improves by 10 percent. The hardtop GT line now returns a combined 19.5 mpg, the convertible gets a combined 19 mpg even.

It's not all about conservation, though: when you want to get on it, the eight-speed can "block shift" four gears, going instantly from eighth to fourth for quicker giddyup. Making the most of that speed is the revised steering and reworked suspension with stiffer springs, anti-roll bars and bushings, guided by new software. The exhaust is an evolution of that used on the Continental Supersports Ice Speed Record car, producing a deeper sound under acceleration. Bringing the proceedings to a stop are huge iron discs with eight-piston calipers, or even huger carbon discs said to last for the life of the car.

To know more, have a read of the press release below, or enjoy the deep blue details in the high-res photo gallery.

Williams ‘faster than points suggest’

Williams is faster than it has been able to show in recent races and still stands a chance of scoring more top results later in the season, according to its reserve driver Valtteri Bottas. The Finn is driving Bruno Senna's Williams in most Friday morning practice sessions this season. Although Williams is only seventh in the constructors' championship and has not taken any top-six finishes since Pastor Maldonado's shock Spanish Grand Prix win, Bottas is adamant that its car is getting better and better
