Zanardi rules out DTM move

Alex Zanardi has now officially ruled out a move to the DTM, despite testing a BMW last month. Speculation that the Italian could return to motor racing following his success in the Paralympics increased after he tried out a DTM BMW M3 as part of the German car manufacturer's 40th anniversary celebrations of its motorsport division in November. But despite holding talks with BMW about a possible tie-up, Zanardi has now confirmed that he wants to remain focused on his cycling - and cannot give the commitment it would take to race in touring cars

Jenson Button's 2012 Formula 1 season started and finished with victories in Australia and Brazil respectively, but in between things didn't go quite as he had hoped. While there were some great moments, notably a dominant win at Spa, tyre and set-up struggles mean that he was never really in the world championship fight.

Motorsports: Meet the Smart Fortwo that should be competing in the 2013 Dakar Rally [w/video]

When it comes to specialty applications of the Smart Fortwo, "off-road motorsports" may seem about as likely as "amphibious assault vehicle." Yet a team has come up with just that (the former, not the latter), creating a rally-ready runabout dubbed the Smart Dakar.

The team used a Fortwo to create a "Smart Buggy 4x4." The creator's website claims that the vehicle is in compliance with FIA regulations, and weighs only 750 kilograms (1,653 pounds). As the name suggests, the intent of this vehicle is to compete in the Dakar Rally, and it looks the part.

It may be the most hard-nosed Smart that you'll ever find, but it has an uphill battle to make it to competition. The race team, headed by Jose Luis "JL" Alvarez, does not have the funds to field a full assortment of vehicles, including two Smarts and a Honda CRF-450, and now all plans have been canceled for this year's Dakar Rally.

JL even appealed to his fans via a YouTube video with the hopes of crowd-funding the project, though it appears that attempt has failed. At any rate, the 2013 Dakar Rally starts January 5 in Lima, Peru, and ends January 20 in Santiago, Chile, and it appears that this team, with its unique ride, will not be attending.

Week Seven brought the iRacing.com Skip Barber Series to Circuit-Zolder.  Located in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium, the ten turn 2.492 mile (4.011 km) circuit includes a few sweeping and fast turns broken apart by three tight chicanes and a hairpin. The layout is loved by some and hated by others but, the love/hate relationship resulted in 663 drivers competing in a race with 303 placing a qualifying lap and 127 completing a time trial throughout the week. Kevin Vaughn (Texas) led the way in the week’s standings, scoring 200 points in the 3276 SOF race in which he landed the pole position, led every lap, and scored the victory by four seconds.  After the event we had the chance to catch up with Kevin, and he commented on his race. “I had [...]

Jenson Button believes any driver moving teams for the start of Formula 1's new rules package in 2014 will be at a significant disadvantage. Report: Suzuki demand in US rises after bankruptcy

Following word that Suzuki is ceasing car sales in America, it appears that demand for the Japanese automaker's wares have increased. According to The Detroit News, American Suzuki Motor Corp. will import an additional 2,500 vehicles to quench demand that has jumped since the company announced that it was filing for bankruptcy and ending sales in America.

Dealers recently informed their sales personnel that no more vehicles would be produced and that this was the final push. With heavy incentives and a seven-year warranty as value-adds, November sales for Suzuki rose in November some 22 percent, up to 2,224 vehicles. December sales also rose, but neither month's gains outweigh the long-term losses for the automaker. While Suzuki will sell roughly 22,000 cars this year in the US, it was selling about 120,000 annually before 2008.

As it stands, Suzuki will sell off the rest of its vehicle inventory, including the 2,500 additional units, and dealers will continue to provide parts an warranty work. With all of this negative news for the automaker, it's impressive to see an interest in Suzuki vehicles even with the imminent shuttering of its North American car sales.

Official: Via Motors promises three EV debuts in Detroit

VIA Motors

Via Motors will descend on the 2013 Detroit Auto Show with three new full-size electric vehicles. Company spokesperson Bob Lutz will pull the sheets back on each of the extended-range EVs personally, including an 800-horsepower, four-wheel-drive pickup truck, a luxury four-wheel-drive SUV and what VIA is calling the world's first 12-passenger extended-range electric van. Given the company's previous efforts, it's a good bet each of the new products will be based on General Motors platforms.

As you may recall, Via hopes to reduce fuel consumption by focusing on popular vehicles that use the most gasoline, including full-size trucks, vans and SUVs. A year ago, Bob Lutz joined the company in a spokesperson role, and has since showed up on Jay Leno's Garage to show off the company's wares. You can check out the full press release below for more information.

The roller coaster named Dover International Speedway played host to Week Seven of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS), and much like the blistering speeds, the point totals were staggering. Schumacher: Vettel comparison futile

Michael Schumacher says people shouldn't compare his successes in Formula 1 to those of Sebastian Vettel after the young German secured his third consecutive title in 2012. Vettel became the youngest triple world champion in history this year , also matching Schumacher and Juan Manuel Fangio as the only other driver to clinch three titles in a row. Seven-time champion Schumacher, who retired from F1 at the end of the season, says what Vettel has achieved is special, but believes trying to draw comparisons between himself and his compatriot makes no sense.

Risden Engineering is a bit of an unknown, if we're being completely honest - we have yet to report on the company to date, and its corporate website is really an information desert save for the name and a few email addresses. Even the press release that we requested from Risden's contact person is short and vague. That's all pretty much okay with us as long as the shadowy tuners, you know, make good on this sweet-looking BMW M6 racecar thing.

Dubbed the Risden 6R, we're told that the M6 modification will result in a vehicle that is more adept at track work, while still being street-legal. In terms of specifics, we read that a full aero kit will be involved, with one fixed and one retractable rear wing (hard to miss). There are obviously new wheels, and the company has also added a fully adjustable suspension, a four-point roll bar and a new braking system - all while reducing curb weight overall.

Apparently more details are to follow after the 6R's official release in the first quarter of 2013. We wait with bated breath.
