Video: Red Bull releases re-edit of F1 car in Lincoln Tunnel with only engine sounds

Red Bull RB7 F1 racecar in Lincoln Tunnel

Just like any vacation, Red Bull Racing had plenty of fun last month when it did a little sightseeing in New York City and New Jersey. First, the team stopped and got a photo op with the New York skyline while playing The Star-Spangled Banner and then it took to the streets of New Jersey driving along the proposed route of the 2014 Grand Prix of America (you know, if it actually happens). Every good trip must come to an end though, so the team heads to the Lincoln Tunnel for the final video of Red Bull's trip, which is just as fun to watch as it is to listen to.

Red Bull Racing teased us with this video last month, but now we finally get to see its RB7 Formula One racer tearing through the tunnel connecting New Jersey and Manhattan. The 1.5-mile long tubes usually see daily traffic of well over 100,000 vehicles, and we're sure there's never been such a powerful car (or so little traffic) commuting underneath the Hudson River. The best part is that the car's engine provides the only soundtrack.

Check out the video below to see and hear what it's like to let a Formula One car loose in the Lincoln Tunnel.

An Ohio Sprawl Leader Begins to Recognize Its Mistakes

Dublin, a wealthy suburb of Columbus, Ohio, was a regional pioneer in job sprawl in the 1990s. Built on former corn fields, this city of 42,000 had barely 5,000 residents in 1980. The suburb was an early and prolific builder of suburban-style office parks, and it was extremely successful at luring big employers. Companies like Wendy’s [...]

Report: Hennessey releases renderings, details of new Viper-based Venom 700R, 1000 Twin Turbo

Hennessey SRT Viper

Hennessey Performance
is known for taking fast cars and making them even faster. Just imagining what the Texas-based tuner can do with the 2013 SRT Viper is pretty exciting, and it seems like we won't have to wait much longer as Hennessey has released renderings and specs for the new Venom 700R and the Venom 1000 Twin Turbo. After purchasing a 2013 Viper or a Viper GTS (for $97,395 and $120,395, respectively), those looking to add a little venom to their snake can have the car shipped to Texas for the upgrades; Hennessey has not released pricing for either of its new Venom Viper models.

Stepping up from the base 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque that the SRT Viper delivers, the Venom 700R gets freer-flowing intake and exhaust, helping to increase the 8.4-liter V10's output up to 725 horses and 695 lb.-ft. of twist. This is done with reworked cylinder heads and exhaust system as well as a retuned engine computer; all with a three-year/36,000-mile warranty. On the 700R, Hennessey claims a 0-60 time of 3.1 second, a quarter-mile time of 10.7 seconds at 134 miles per hour, and a top speed of 216 mph.

If that isn't enough power and speed for you, Hennessey can dig even deeper into the engine and toss on a couple of turbochargers to create the Venom 1000 Twin Turbo. Hennessey says this engine will be rated at 1,120 hp and 1,092 lb.-ft. of torque which can get this car to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds and through the quarter mile in 9.7 seconds at 152 mph. To accommodate such massive output, almost everything about the Viper's engine has to be upgraded except for the block and crankshaft.

It isn't clear if these stated performance and engine specs are preliminary numbers or actual tested numbers, but they're impressive nonetheless. Options for both cars range from aero upgrades to must-have racing equipment like a rollbar and five-point harnesses.

Check out all of the detailed changes being made to the Hennessey Venom cars in the press release posted below.

Official: Mini Countryman JCW priced from $35,550

2013 Mini Countryman JCW - front three-quarter view

Got a hankerin' for a Mini crossover that boasts all-terrain traction while simultaneously wears the badge of race-bred performance? Well, the Mini Countryman John Cooper Works is just that sweet spot in the company's Venn diagram of "huggable performance" and "all-wheel drive." The company has just announced pricing for its spectacularly named John Cooper Works Countryman Cooper S ALL4 (phew!), and the cost of entry starts at rather dear $35,550. Though Mini doesn't specify if if destination charges are included (usually $700 for other models), it is general practice for the brand to include it in its pricing.

For that $35.5K, you get a turbocharged 1.6-liter four with 208-horsepower and 198 pound-feet of torque, 18-inch alloys, sports seats, a lower and firmer sport suspension, and of course the All4 all-wheel-drive system. Fun fact: This is the first-ever AWD model ever to wear JCW livery.

While Mini does not list options prices for the JCW Countryman, they are sure to be plentiful. For the sake of comparison, the JCW Clubman stars at $33,000, and when fitted with features like racing stripes, customized mirrors, heated Recaro front seats, Bluetooth, navigation, sport suspension, and other goodies, the price can jump upwards of $5,000, and that's before adding a typical Mini assortment of cheeky accessories and plug-in doodads. Check out the press release and see what else comes with the new JCW Countryman below.

Paris: Jaguar F-Type heralds return of first new sports car for Leaping Cat in 50 years [UPDATE]

"We're not worshipping the ashes of our ancestors here."

Jaguar finally has its much anticipated - and much leaked - new sports car. Revealed at the Musée Rodin Museumin Paris ahead of the Paris Motor Show, the rakish convertible picks up the long-dormant mantle of the legendary E-Type, but it isn't a retro-retread. Autoblog was invited to England earlier this month for a hush-hush preview of the F-Type, where Jaguar Vehicle Line Director Ian Hoben assured us that "We're not worshipping the ashes of our ancestors here." While Jag has offered the larger XK grand tourer for years, it hasn't really fielded a new sports car in 50 years. And as Hoben points out, "For us not to be there [the segment] seems as wrong as Ferrari or Porsche not building sports cars."

The new all-aluminum F-Type is a strict two-seat affair, none of the leather-wrapped and seatbelt-equipped parcel shelves of the XK here. Available in three trims, F-Type, F-Type S and F-Type V8 S, the baby Jag will offer one of three powertrains, a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 with 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 (380 hp / 339 lb-ft.), or a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 (495 hp / 460 lb-ft). The sole transmission at launch will be ZF's ubiquitous eight-speed automatic, with paddles and a more conventional gearshift lever in favor of the rotary selector of recent fame. Jag won't confirm it, but we suspect a manual transmission will be made available in a year's time, possibly on a harder-core R model. In its top specification, Jag promises a 0-60 dash of 4.2 seconds and a limited top speed of 186 mph. The mid-level V6 S does the deed in 4.8 seconds and taps out at 171 mph, while the 'base' F-Type still runs to 60 in 5.1 seconds and hits a 161-mph vMax. While we have yet to drive them, we have heard the new cars fire up and under power, as the Brits say, they sound "right cracking."

Gibbs hails Hamlin influence

Team owner Joe Gibbs has hailed the role Denny Hamlin played in galvanising his team en route to securing his outfit's 100th NASCAR victory. After running out of fuel and losing a top five finish on the final lap at Chicagoland , Hamlin then had to contend with a team error when his tyres were set to the wrong pressure in qualifying at Loudon, leaving him a lowly 32nd . Gibbs said Hamlin's ability to handle both setbacks without accusation was a major factor in the team's subsequent resurgence in the race.

Video: GM is building a better crash-test dummy

New crash-test dummies

Anyone can be an ordinary dummy, whereas being a good crash-test dummy takes work. A few things you probably didn't know: the official name for a crash-test dummy is "anthropomorphic test device" (ATD), General Motors "has a long history" designing ATDs, and the process is so specialized that there's even a Rear Impact Dummy Task Group.

GM is working with five other OEMs on the dummies that help ensure humans stay as safe as possible in car crashes. The latest advance is the second generation of the Biofidelic Rear Impact Dummy, or BioRID II, designed by engineers at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden. It has a backbone with 24 simulated vertebrae (the same number we have in our real vertebral columns) to recreate natural seating positions and back and neck movement in rear collisions. The challenge now is to make sure that the BioRID II can "deliver repeatable, reproducible test results" from which the next advances in safety can be engineered.

That's where GM comes in. One of its award-winning engineers produced a rear-impact sled just for the purpose. To find out more about the secret life of ATDs, you'll want to check out the video and press release below.

Pastor Maldonado is very confident he can stop his run of eight consecutive non-scores in Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix after qualifying on the front row for Formula 1's only night race. The Williams driver, who won the Spanish Grand Prix in May from pole position, but has not scored a point since , stunned the field with a surprising lap in Q3 that put him on the front row, alongside pole-man Lewis Hamilton - a driver with whom he has clashed on three previous occasions in F1.

Raikkonen fears Lotus will struggle

Kimi Raikkonen thinks Lotus is set to struggle in the Singapore Grand Prix after lapping two seconds off the pace in Friday practice . The Finn was 12th in both sessions, with his team-mate Romain Grosjean 15th and 10th. Raikkonen reckons that the two-second gap to the front in practice was not fuel-related, but an accurate gauge of Lotus's current speed around Marina Bay.

Things looked quite difficult for the drivers of the European Sim Racing Association V8 Supercar GT Omega Championship early in the practice session for the first race of the championship at the Suzuka International Circuit. Rens Broekman was very fast indeed early in practice and took the pole position, nearly a full second faster than Italian sim racer Andrea Scognamillo.  Thomas Van Bussel, Michele Curina and Tobias Czerny completed the top five and pinned their hopes for the race on the fact that they were running consistent times with their race setup. The start of the race looked very impressive with 31 roaring V8s going down to the first corner of the magnificent Suzuka track. Report: Chrysler trademarks 8 Mile, ProMaster

Fiat Ducato van - red - front three-quarter view

Chrysler has been busy at the trademark office. Allpar.com reports the manufacturer has laid claim to a stack of new names, including Detroit Motor Works, Wrangler Freedom Edition, 8 Mile, Crossroad and Chrysler 100, as well as Ram ProMaster and the Ram ProMaster City. The automaker has made no secret of the fact that it wants to build a new small car, and that the machine will almost certainly ride under the Chrysler 100 banner. Dealers reportedly got a closer look at the vehicle at a recent gathering in Las Vegas.

Likewise, the two ProMaster names are little surprise, as Fiat intends to give the Ford Transit and Transit connect some competition with its own European-style Ducato vans. Now it looks as if those will come with ProMaster badges.

But, names like Detroit Motor Works, 8 Mile and Crossroad all leave the door open for some speculation. Allpar.com also reports Chrysler has laid claim to Active Air, which it speculates may be applied to the company's variable valve timing systems.
