2012 Mini Cooper Roadster, top down

Mini has officially announced pricing for the company's new Cooper Roadster. The tiny droptop will carry a base MSRP of $24,350 in the U.S., while the Cooper S Roadster will set you back $27,350. The top-of-the-line John Cooper Works Roadster, meanwhile, will command a sticker of $34,500 (*pricing exclude a $700 destination and handling fee). Should buyers wish to drop an automatic transmission into their Cooper Roadster or Cooper S Roadster, the two-pedal option will cost an additional $1,250, but the John Cooper Works Roadster is only available with a manual gearbox. Mini says 16-inch alloy wheels are standard on the base roadster and its S counterpart, while the topped-out JCW Roadster will roll on flashier 17-inch wheels.

That means the Cooper Roadster requires a $3,450 premium over the base hardtop Coupe, but curiously, it's cheaper than the Cooper Convertible by $600. While the latter doesn't exactly offer palatial amounts of space for rear passengers, it is still considerably more functional than its Cooper Roadster equivalent. We have to wonder if there's enough of a price differential between the two models to keep buyers from skipping the more rakish Roadster for its four-seat counterpart, but either way, we're just pleased it doesn't share the Coupe's awkward backwards-ballcap roofline. Hit the jump for the lengthy press release.

Official: Rolls-Royce revels in the customization options most of its customers spring for

Rolls-Royce Ghost

If you're going to shell out for a brand new Rolls-Royce, you're going to want to get it exactly the way you want it, right? Right. And that's the case for the majority of buyers even of the (relatively) more accessible Ghost as it is of the higher-end Phantom range. In fact, Goodwood reports that 56% of buyers of the Ghost (including the extended wheelbase model) opted for some measure of personalization direct from the factory.

Intriguing as those numbers are - and as helpful as they've been to the BMW division's bottom line - they still pale in comparison to the proportion of customized Phantom models. In North America alone, a solid 84% of Phantom buyers opt for bespoke personalization (up from just 30% in 2005). In continental Europe, those numbers rose from 50% to 89%. In the marque's home market of the UK, they rose from 60% up to 88%, while in the Asia Pacific market they jumped from 50% to 79%. Most impressively, however, just about every single Phantom ordered in the Middle East comes in as a custom order, standing at 99% from the 75% at which it stood in 2005.

So just what constitutes "bespoke personalization" in the Rolls-Royce catalog? It could be anything from unique paint colors (like the questionable metallic pink pictured above) to custom humidors. Take a stroll through the high-resolution images in the gallery above to see just a few of the options.

Report: Ford scraps "Drive One" ad slogan in favor of "Go Further"

Ford Badge in the rain

Ford has adopted a new ad slogan designed to ward off complacency after successful run of nearly six years. The company is reportedly retiring its "Drive One" tag line for "Go Further," which will be used in marketing campaigns in both the U.S. and Europe. Ford had been using the line "Feel the Difference" in the EU. The company says its old slogans were designed to convince buyers to give Ford products a look after the automaker rebounded from near bankruptcy. Executives now say the manufacturer is in an entirely different place in its history and that it's time for a slogan that reflects that position.

Ford is expected to announce its 11th quarterly net profit on Friday, and the automaker recently announced it will begin paying a dividend for the first time in six years, according to Automotive News. The company is even within reach of an investment-grade credit rating.

When it came time to craft the company's new tag line, Ford apparently specifically looked at Nike's "Just Do It" and McDonald's "I'm Lovin' It" as inspiration. While "Drive One" is on its way out the door, the internal "One Ford" will continue to soldier on as an indicator of the company's global strategy.

Symonds: 2011 Virgin had potential

Marussia Racing consultant Pat Symonds believes that the team's 2011 car had very good potential in some areas but was badly hamstrung by poor aerodynamics. After relying solely on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for its first two designs, the ex-Virgin team is embracing windtunnel technology as part of its design restructuring, which has also seen the exit of former partner Wirth Research and the announcement of a new collaboration with McLaren

Considering that French automaker Peugeot hasn’t sold cars in the U.S. for 20 years—and has no immediate plans to return—you’d think the company’s decision to end its participation in big-time endurance sports-car racing, effective immediately, wouldn’t have much impact on the American racing scene. Sebastian Vettel's rivals have been warned that the double Formula 1 world champion is better prepared for the forthcoming season than he has ever been before. Horner predicts Webber resurgence

Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner has predicted that Mark Webber will come back stronger than ever in 2012 in response to his difficult '11 season. While Webber's team-mate Sebastian Vettel swept to 11 grand prix victories and a dominant Formula 1 title in 2011, the Australian was only able to win once and finished third in the standings. But speaking on the main stage at AUTOSPORT International, Horner said Webber's improving form in the latter part of 2011 and the chance to recharge over the off-season should see him back to his best when this year's title chase commences.

V8 Supercar Showdown Looms Large.

The iRacing V8 Supercar series by Bigpond Sport continues to thrill, and the top split is heading for a showdown worthy of it’s immense status. This epic iRacing event will take place at Road Atlanta this Monday 23rd January. The final season for 2011/12 has been a story of intense, consistent rivalry between Trans-Tasman’s Madison Down, Tatts.com Racing’s Mitchell McLeod and Nfinity Esports’ Rens Broekman. While Down has had the upper hand, indeed dominating most rounds, McLeod has shown him up enough to stay in the chase. “Road Atlanta will be bigger than Ben Hur…” Right now, the gap between Down and McLeod, first and second, is a measly 42 points. Meanwhile, a dropping-worst-round points system stands to benefit Broekman. Since our last report on a messy Round Six at [...]
