Paffett wins first race of new-look DTM

Gary Paffett headed Jamie Green to win the opening round of the 2012 DTM at Hockenheim; Mercedes' British drivers taking a one-two finish for the manufacturer. From sixth on the grid, Paffett passed the slow-starting Dirk Werner and Mike Rockenfeller on the opening lap, and then made a superbly-judged move on Edoardo Mortara's Rosberg Audi at the Mercedes Arena shortly afterwards to take third. An error from polesitter Mattias Ekstrom, who ran wide at Turn 2 during the early stages, allowed Paffett's HWA team-mate Green to take the lead, and the 2005 champion then also made it past the Abt Audi three corners later with a neat move.

Brooks Best in Class C

The season long battle between Justin Brooks and Heath Hindman for the NASCAR iRacing Class C Series (NiCCS) crown came down the final two weeks of the season. Hundreds of sim racers came out to test their skills at the Darlington Raceway and Kentucky Speedway in the final two rounds, but when the final laps were ran and the checkered flag fell on 2012 Season One, it was Brooks who would ultimately edge out Hindman for the prestigious title. Week Eleven of the series took the Trucks to the Darlington Raceway where Phil Juhring took the top spot over 400 others who took a green flag at the track “Too Tough to Tame.” Juhring’s big win of the week came during a 2801 sof race on April 10th in which [...]

Report: Slovenian supercar builder aims to tackle Lamborghini Aventador

It's been almost a fortnight, which just might be a record, since we last visited a previously unheard-of supercar-maker. Next up to keep the high-po exotic ball in play is Tushek Supercars, hailing from Slovenia (that's here), with its quaintly archaically named Forego T700. The company just made an appearance at the Top Marques Monaco with its first car, the 444-horsepower Renovatio T500 (pictured in our gallery below) with a modular hardtop, but the T700 will push things much further.

Founder Aljosa Tushek told Autocar the T700's targets: less than 2,200 pounds, more than 700 horsepower, up to 3.3gs for cornering. That latter number sounds like a math error would not only double the Renovatio's number, it would triple the cornering force sustained by the Lamborghini Aventador around the Nardo test track.

The limited-to-30-units Renovatio is priced at £245,000 ($394,934 U.S.) with deliveries promised later this year. Due in 2013, you can expect the T700 to outdo the T500's price by at least double as well, and you can expect both of them to never be sold in the U.S.

Beijing: BMW i8 Spyder takes to the stage bearing eDrive name

BMW i8 Sypder Concept - live on stage in Beijing

BMW has created the BMW i sub-brand for its upcoming production plug-in models, which currently include three concepts: the i3, i8 and the i8 Spyder. After keeping that third model away from our eager cameras at the New York Auto Show, BMW finally showed off the i8 Spyder Concept in the metal at the Beijing Motor Show today.

The car itself we've already learned plenty about, but seeing it on stage shows once again that BMW is serious about putting cars like these on the road (toned down from the concept's style, of course, perhaps with something like this). We're more than ready for the through-the-road, plug-in hybrid that packs a 96-kW (131-horsepower) electric motor in front and a turbocharged three-cylinder gas engine offering 223 hp in back. 0-62 in five seconds and maybe 78 MPGe? Yes, please.

BMW is also making official the "eDrive" name, which is the new catch-all name for all of the electric drivetrain components: motor, battery and motor management system. First hinted at in 2008, the eDrive designation will be used "for the drive technology of all future electric and plug-in hybrid cars," so get used to seeing it a lot.

Official: Cadillac expanding XTS production to China

2013 Cadillac XTS sedan live reveal in Los Angeles

Cadillac's new XTS isn't just headed to China, it will be built there. The forthcoming full-size luxury cruiser had already been earmarked for production in General Motors' Oshawa, Ontario Assembly Plant, but the automaker has just announced in Beijing that it will also be built in China with its joint venture partner Shanghai General Motors.

Cadillac is still a relatively small player in China's premium segment, with just 68 dealers and 30,000 sales last year. However, it's growing quickly, with March sales up more than 35 percent year-over-year to 2,745 units. Better still, General Motors says Cadillac's average buying age is very young - just 35 - and it expects to have 120 dealers online by the end of this year to meet growing demand.

The idea of local XTS production strikes us as a smart one, as China is enjoying a swell in demand for luxury cars, and it has always maintained a strong demand for vehicles with large rear seats. Cadillac already has a solid track record building in the communist nation, as it first began assembling the China-only SLS Executive Sedan - essentially an extended wheelbase STS - back in 2006.

2013 Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham

It's been the better part of a year since we first brought you reports that Victoria Beckham - who had then just signed on as a celebrity "creative director" for the Range Rover brand - was set to get her own special edition of the chic new Evoque. We didn't know quite what to make of the news then - much less when the British purveyor of luxury SUVs released a teaser just a few days ago - but now JLR has taken the wraps off its glamorous new special edition, and it's not nearly as gaudy as you might think.

As you can see, the second vehicle released by Jaguar Land Rover's new Engineered To Order division (alongside the new Jaguar XJ Ultimate) is characterized by matte black paint, which contrasts with the gloss black and rose-gold trim. The interior is finished in vintage-finish tan leather, with mohair floor mats and a microsuede headliner. It also comes with a four-piece set of fitted leather luggage, and a leather portfolio carrying the owner's manual and bearing Victoria Beckham's own signature.

In other words, it's suitably posh for a vehicle resulting from a collaboration between the Land Rover Design team and the pop star who made her name as Posh Spice. Only five examples out of the 200 planned for production will make it Stateside, with no word yet on pricing. We'll also be keeping an eye out for more images of the luxed-out, matte-finish Evoque when they surface, but in the meantime you can view the solitary pic released so far in high-resolution and delve into the full press release below.

New Names and Upsets

Week Four of the iRacing.com Skip Barber Racing School Premier Series kicked-off in the small town of Braselton, Georgia, home of Road Atlanta.  The 12 turn, 2.54 mile road course proved to be an exciting and challenging configuration for the 84 sim racers who competed this week as some new names and upsets filled the podium positions in the five official online races of the week. The first race of the week during the 10:00 GMT timeslot produced the most exciting finish of the week.  The 21 drivers who elected to compete combined their iRating for the highest Strength of Field (SoF) race of the week at 2427. The Flawless Floridian (aka Christian Aranha) started on the pole and led the field to green. Two laps in, Aranha made his [...]

Petty pondering manufacturer options

Richard Petty says there is currently no decision about which manufacturer his NASCAR Sprint Cup team will represent in 2013, despite the current Ford squad being favourite to take over as Dodge's lead outfit. Dodge has yet to announce its 2013 Cup line-up after Penske - its main outfit since '03 - decided it would switch to Ford from next year. Petty gave Dodge some of its best years in NASCAR in the 1970s as a driver, winning two Cup titles and 37 races for the brand

While driving toward our southern-Ohio handling loop, we stopped at a familiar haunt: the Toy Barn, in Dublin, Ohio. Report: Mini Clubvan concept gets green light, headed for U.S. showrooms

Mini Clubvan concept live at Geneva Motor Show 2012

Color us unsurprised. Car and Driver reports that Mini officials have confirmed a production version of the company's Clubvan concept first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March. We expected as much - after all, parent BMW has demonstrated real adeptness at building a myriad of derivatives from the basic Mini Cooper architecture, and the boutique brand already markets more spinoffs than Law & Order, so what's one more?

Essentially a panel van version of the Clubman, C/D says the Clubvan will appear in U.S. showrooms this September as a 2013 model. It isn't immediately clear if the model will offer both the standard 121-horsepower four and the Clubman S' 181-horsepower turbo, but C/D says we shouldn't expect a John Cooper Works version.

Interestingly, it doesn't appear that Mini will weld in sheet steel where the Clubman's rear side windows normally go - instead, C/D reports the company will employ body-color foil on the outside and plastic and safety foil liners inside. Other changes will include a trimmed-out cargo hold with power sockets and tie-downs. As with the concept, a stainless-steel grille will be fitted to keep cargo from intruding on the passenger compartment.

No word yet on whether the loss of rear seats will make the Clubvan any lighter, but Mini says the vehicle will offer more cargo capacity than its passenger-minded brethren. No guidance yet on pricing, either, but we're guessing that like other Mini models, boutiques and delivery services will have to shell out a pretty penny to get their hands on this dutch-door cutie. Our only question now is... how long will it take for Mini to come out with a panelized version of its Countryman softroader?
