Gordon: drivers must respect NASCAR

Four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon believes drivers have to know when and how to voice criticisms after Denny Hamlin was fined for comments about the new Gen 6 car. Hamlin is appealing against the $25,000 fine levied when he suggested that the quality of Sprint Cup racing had declined this year during a post-race interview at Phoenix last week. Gordon argued that drivers had a responsibility for the sport's presentation.

Report: Provo concept name has Kia embroiled in terrorism controversy?

Kia Provo concept revealed at 2013 Geneva Motor Show - front three-quarter view

In the relatively lengthy press release that Kia composed for the launch of its Provo concept car at the Geneva Motor Show this week, the company never mentioned where the name came from, or what it means for the car. A very basic web search for "Provo" reveals that the inspiration for the hatch could have been a city in Utah, a township in South Dakota or a village in Bosnia. The name could be a reference to either an American (Fred) or Canadian (Dwayne) football player, and Provo might also accurately reference a "Dutch counterculture movement in the mid-1960s" or a ship in the US Navy. More likely than any of those, however, is that the Kia designers of the concept - a car that was wholly a product of the Korean automaker's design studios in Frankfurt, for the record - meant it as a play on the existing Pro_cee'd hatchback.

What the designers and Kia executives that signed off on the Provo almost certainly did not have in mind was a reference to a street name for the Provisional Irish Republican Army. That "Provo" was, according to TheDetroitBureau.com, an outlawed army faction that was blamed for some 2,000 deaths in Northern Ireland during a period stretching from 1970 to 1997.

And yet, it was that association that led Gregory Campbell, a member of parliament from Northern Ireland, to introduce legislation that would ban Kia from selling a car under the name Provo. Kia, quick to realize the sizable gaffe it has stumbled into with the name, has reportedly already promised not to use the name for a production vehicle.

Report: Ford Mustang to get four-cylinder in Europe, but not US

Ford Mustang SVO

Fans of the Ford Mustang SVO, which was produced from 1884 through 1986 with a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine and a manual transmission, may be interested to know that Ford is reportedly going to introduce something similar for 2015. But don't get too excited if you live in the US, as Edmunds reports that the vehicle will be offered in Europe only. Boo!

According to the report, Ford will put a version of its EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder into the engine bay of the Mustang. The engine would be enlarged from its current 2.0 liters to 2.3 liters, taking horsepower from 252 to around 300. The well-known 5.0 V8 engine will also be available in Europe.

"The Mustang is uniquely Ford and has a huge fan base here in Europe. Now those fans have something to look forward to and we look forward to providing more details in the near future," says Ford of Europe CEO Stephen Odell. That's great... but why not offer buyers in the States the (likely) fuel-efficient turbo option, too?

Geneva: Sbarro Réact' E.V. isn't electric, could be very fast

The Espera Sbarro Montbéliard School of Design has followed up its 137-horsepower Intencity EV concept and 360-hp V8-powered Eight concept with this, the Réact' E.V. Note the periods between the "e" and the "v" - this isn't an electric vehicle, it's an "Ecological Vehicle" with a hybrid powertrain.

In back, underneath the reptilian-scale-like cover, is a Peugeot-sourced V6 with 210 horsepower that turns the rear wheels. Turning the front wheels are two DC brushless motors that are each worth 100kW and 553 pound-feet of torque. They get juice from a 24-kWh battery pack and combined grunt is said to be 484 hp.

Rumor is that it took the students just 13 weeks to get it all together and that the two-seater coupe actually runs, something we haven't seen the other two concepts do. We'll find out soon enough since they have plans to run the Réact' E.V. in the 14th Monte Carlo Rallye of New Energies later this month. There are a few more details in the press release below to go with the high-res gallery above.

Formula 1 rookie Max Chilton says the uncertainty surrounding the identity of his Marussia team-mate has been a big advantage as it has increased the amount of track time available to him during pre-season. The 21-year-old Briton, who is stepping up from GP2 this year, drove the MR02 on the opening day of F1's final test on Thursday, and went ninth fastest . With Timo Glock having been released from his contract in January, and Luiz Razia's future with the team now in doubt, Chilton has now completed seven of the nine days of testing this year; more than any other driver.

iRacer Profile: Tommaso Carla

It took Tommaso Carla two stabs at supplying his answers for this week’s iRacer Profile.  The first go produced a number of, er, brief (not to say monsylabic) answers.  So much so that Tommaso re-sent his answers with an apology for the first set being a little too “Raikkonen-esque.” While Tommaso stopped well short of saying “Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing!” his record during his brief membership at iRacing strongly suggests that, like the pithy Finn, he doesn’t need a whole lot of advice when it comes to racing.  After joining iRacing in October, Carla quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with, besting Elmar Erlekotte to capture the 2012 S4 SpecRacer Ford Challenge with an impressive 37 wins from 58 starts.  He didn’t do [...]

Aiming for Number One . . . Again

The iRacing.com World Championship Grand Prix Series set to kick-off this Saturday at Spa-Francorchamps in an online race that will be broadcast on iRacing.com/live at 14:00 GMT (9 am).   Hugo Luis will be looking to hit the ground running in a bid to regain the title he lost in 2012. We caught up with the My3id team sim-racer to get his thoughts on last year and the season ahead. To many competitors, finishing second to Team Redline’s Greger Huttu in the 2012 iWCGPS is quite an achievement.  For Luis, who was defending the title, it was more of a case of what might have been. “It could be better. I didn’t feel that happy about the first half season performance,” he answers earnestly. “I already started the season without [...]

Hamilton tops penultimate day of testing

Lewis Hamilton ended the third day of the final pre-season Barcelona test on top of the timesheets. The weather was the best seen so far and the Mercedes driver's morning effort of 1m20.558s, set on Pirelli's soft tyre, proved quicker than anyone could manage in the afternoon.

Pedrosa back on top at Sepang

Dani Pedrosa restored his testing superiority on the final day of MotoGP's second winter 2013 test at Sepang on Thursday. Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo had become the first man to beat Pedrosa in a 2013 test when he led the way on day two , but Honda was back in front as the Malaysian test wrapped up. It was a one-two for the team, as Pedrosa's new team-mate Marc Marquez took second place, just 0.081 seconds adrift

Video: This man loves his car and hates hail

The heart can be a cruel master. It's a sad fact, but a true one in our experience. And it's fair to say that our experience in matters of the heart as they regard our automobiles is rather shallow when compared with the subject of this ludicrous video.

The car-lover herein has adopted a strategy to protect his car from a rather impressive hailstorm that is as ineffective as it is hilarious. "Swimming" away the projectiles from the top of the car is such an insane idea, in fact, that only the ferocity of the storm keeps us from believing that this wasn't a cynical grab at YouTube stardom. It still may have been, who knows, but the hail-swatting hero didn't come out of the attempt unbruised. Enjoy the madness below.

Indy plays down leaked report ideas

IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway's owners say some of the recommendations in a leaked report from Boston Consulting Group could come to fruition, but that it should not be taken as a firm blueprint for the future. The Associated Press reported that it had obtained what Indy parent firm Hulman & Co CEO Mark Miles described as an "early version" of a 115-page report on improving the positioning of the IndyCar Series.

The World Center of Speed was the host for Week Four of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (fixed setup). Over 3,100 sim racers took to Daytona International Speedway during the week in hopes of taking the checkered flag first. That being said, winning at Daytona is something that all drivers want to accomplish in their careers, whether it is on the virtual track or the real track. This week, someone who knows how to put things in the right place at the right time was able to take the victory in the week’s high Strength of Field event. Byron Daley (New York) drove his [...]
