Wild, Wild West Side Has Its Own Vigilante Traffic Cop

You’ve got to already be a little bit crazy to choose to drive into Midtown for work each day (as the record-breaking ridership numbers on the PATH train attest). Gooden Wins at Mid-Ohio

iRacer Wyatt Gooden capped another strong F2000 Championship Series weekend with podium finishes in both races at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, including his second victory of the 2012 season in Sunday’s weekend-ending event. Da Costa wins GP3 Hungaroring opener

Antonio Felix da Costa led round 11 of the GP3 Series from start to finish at the Hungaroring on Saturday evening to score his second victory of the season, and the third of his career, for Carlin. There was huge drama on the opening half lap of the race, as poleman Aaro Vainio (Lotus) made a terrible start, while his title rival Mitch Evans (MW Arden) made a blinder from the second row. Despite weaving at Evans, which put him on the grass, Vainio could do nothing to stop the Kiwi coming past him, who then took the fight to leader da Costa.

Brawn: F1 teams must trust FIA policing

Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn says rival teams have to simply trust that the FIA is policing Formula 1 in the proper way, on the back of another Red Bull technical controversy in Hungary. Just a week after an issue with Red Bull's engine maps in Hockenheim, it emerged in Hungary that the Milton Keynes-based outfit had been asked at the Canadian GP to modify a device that could have allowed the team to alter suspension settings manually - something that is against the regulations.

Kia K3 (Forte) Sedan

Kia has released proper photos of the coming 2013 Forte/Cerato and hints at the details to be found under the attractive new sheetmetal. As Kia tells us, this new Forte is plainly longer, lower and wider than the current model, and its longer wheelbase will provide more interior room, although we don't know how it compares to the current model or the competition.

This isn't just a new look. The 2013 Forte has an entirely new bodyshell structure and LED lamps all around. A revised engine lineup promises "class-leading fuel economy." We should know more soon enough. For now there's a press release posted below to accompany the images released so far.

Hamilton denied Red Bull a one-two by squeezing in between Webber and his third-placed team-mate Sebastian Vettel. The first half of the session, when the field was still working with medium tyres, saw the Red Bulls leading the way for a spell early on, before Raikkonen went in front for Lotus and then Hamilton got in a 1m21.706s to put himself over half a second clear of the field just before the midway point.

Report: NHTSA probing Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500 models over safety concerns

Jeep Grand Cherokee

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened up investigations into more than 335,000 Chrysler Group vehicles, following reports of fires in Jeep Grand Cherokee models and rear wheel failures in the Dodge Ram 1500. According to documents posted to the NHTSA website, 106,803 Grand Cherokees and 230,000 2009-2010 Ram 1500s are being investigated.

There have been two reports of fires in the Grand Cherokee since May, and a third complaint regarding the JGC losing power steering fluid, resulting in a loss of power steering.

One of the owners whose vehicle caught fire says that he saw power steering fluid in his driveway prior to the incident. NHSTA suspects that the power steering fluid may be leaking onto hot surfaces in the engine compartment.

Additionally, NHSTA is opening up an investigation in the 2009-2010 Dodge Ram, following 12 complaints of rear differential failure, causing rear wheel lock-up.

In the 12 incidents, the common thread appears to be a loosening of the rear differential pinion nut. The majority of these complaints allege that situation resulted in the drive shaft locking up. One report claims that the driveshaft detached and punctured the fuel tank.

This report follows a successful sales month for the Grand Cherokee. June was the best month in sales for the all-road Jeep since 2005, and sales are up 38 percent for the first six months of 2012. Among Chrysler vehicles, the 75,117 units of the Grand Cherokee sold are second only to to the Ram, which sold 138,581 units in the first half of 2012.

Hulkenberg disappointed by race slump

Nico Hulkenberg conceded he was hoping for a better result in the German Grand Prix, even though he said he did not expect to be able to hold on to fourth. The Force India driver started from the second row of the grid after a strong qualifying showing in the wet, but his pace in the dry did not allow him to fight to retain the position. Hulkenberg dropped to ninth place in the end, scoring two points for his team, but said after his promising Saturday he was hoping for a better result

Castroneves fends off Sato for win

Helio Castroneves denied Takuma Sato a maiden IndyCar victory in a close-fought battle around the Edmonton airport circuit. Castroneves and Sato had made the lead contest their own in the final stint, but the Brazilian was forced to work hard to keep Sato behind him. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan driver was the quickest driver on the circuit towards the end of the race and closed down a gap of more than three seconds to get close enough to have a couple of lunges at his Penske rival

Evans wins crash-marred GP3 race

Mitch Evans won round 10 of the GP3 Series at Hockenheim in Germany on Sunday morning, but the event was interrupted - and pretty much ruined - by two big accidents that required medical attention for Vicky Piria and Fabiano Machado. Lotus's Daniel Abt was the early leader, a rocket-like start taking him past poleman Evans (MW Arden), who spent the run to the first corner squeezing Tamas Pal Kiss towards the pitwall to retain second place. The race was soon interrupted by a lengthy safety car after a lap one crash that involved Piria

Exclusive: Cadillac sets sights on No. 1

Don Butler

Don Butler, Cadillac's vice president of marketing, says Cadillac will to return as the No. 1 luxury brand in the United States, some day.

"It's my goal that we're the No. 1 luxury brand in the U.S.," Butler said. "I'm not going to say when we hope to achieve that, yet, but there's no reason to aim for anything less."

Cadillac certainly has reason to think it's moving up. The all-new 2013 ATS arrives next month to directly compete with the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C300. The larger Cadillac XTS launched last month, and next year, the third generation CTS arrives and new Escalade will also roll into dealerships.

"We've gone nearly three years without new product," Butler said. "Now we're bringing in some great vehicles."

Currently, Cadillac would need to add more than 100,000 units to take the top spot from Mercedes-Benz, which sold 261,573 units in 2011. Cadillac sold 152,389 vehicles in 2011. And that's just to top Mercedes. Lexus, which lost its top spot last year, has vowed to recapture it and Audi recently said it plans on becoming the No. 1 luxury brand in the world.

Cadillac sales are currently down 18.6 percent for the year, according to Autodata Corp. though that number will likely change dramatically when the ATS hits showrooms. Luxury vehicle sales are up 12.8 percent and luxury car sales are up 16.8 percent.

Butler readily admits that Cadillac has a lot of work to do to get back on top. The brand's name used to be synonymous with luxury; it was the Cadillac of luxury brands. But it hasn't been that for decades.

"We used to be up on a pedestal," he said. "Now, we're not."

Di Resta: Valenica form not a one-off

Paul di Resta believes that Force India is capable of repeating the form it showed in the European Grand Prix as it fights with Sauber and Williams in the constructors' championship. The team's VJM05 was a top 10 contender all weekend around the streets of Valencia, with di Resta and team-mate Nico Hulkenberg both making Q3 and scoring points

Abt grabs maiden GP3 pole at home

Daniel Abt will start the ninth round of the GP3 Series at Hockenheim from pole position. The German scored his first-ever GP3 pole with two laps good enough for the top spot in his Lotus-run machine, his eventual 1m31.961s coming on his last lap of the session, which coincided with a couple of yellow flags around the circuit. That lap was 0.23 seconds ahead of championship leader Mitch Evans (MW Arden), who ditched his final effort, despite setting the fastest sector one time, due to encountering a spinning Carmen Jorda at the Spitzkehre hairpin on his final lap.

Big Daddy Customs turns Tata Safari into Land Rover Evoque

Big Daddy Customs Moon Rover

India's Big Daddy Customs has made a Moon Rover. What's that? It's a Tata Safari SUV (pictured at right) made to look like a Range Rover Evoque, but only really from the front, at a low angle, ideally in low light and assuming you'd never seen a real Evoque or the donor vehicle before. To get an idea of dimensions, the Evoque is a couple inches wider than a Safari, but the Safari is nearly a foot longer and more than a foot taller.

Having said that, given what Big Daddy started with, it's not entirely dreadful. The Evoque's signatures have been reasonably approximated, and the "custom white paint job" is part of the package. Nothing's been changed inside, but according to the company's Facebook page. "Apart from glass house area, everything else has been modified in the body shell."

So it's good to know that at least they take their work seriously. We think.

Di Resta: Driver market still open

Paul di Resta believes that the Formula 1 driver market is still wide open as the season approaches its summer break. Down With Crown In Sight

Round 11 of the iRacing.com V8 Supercars Series presented by BigPond returned the States with a visit to 4km, 12 turn Road Atlanta.  A long back straight made it difficult to develop a setup which would be fast through the turns and fast on the back straight, but a lot of people traded straight line speed to keep corner speeds high. Richard Hamstead missed another week of online racing, basically handing Madison Down the series championship.    Not one to back into a title, Down would all but secure the race win when he qualified on pole in the dying minutes of the session, besting Justin Ruggier’s time with a 1:21.696.  Ruggier would start second with a 1:21.799 while team mate Scott McLaughlin would start third on his return to the [...]
