Video: Ford shows off Mustang Shelby GT500's new launch control
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Technology, Videos, Ford
Listen to the sage words of the late Carroll Shelby: "650 horsepower? Nobody else has it." We're guessing this footage was recorded a little while back, before the final certified rating of the 5.8-liter supercharged engine in the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 came in at 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque.
Indeed, there isn't a single car anywhere near the sticker price of the 2013 GT500 - not even the stupid-fast Chevy Corvette ZR1 - that offers as many horses under the hood as the most powerful production Mustang in history. Suffice it to say, reeling in 662 galloping ponies and sending them to the rear tires isn't an easy conundrum to solve.
And that's where launch control comes into play. It's a cool system, allowing the driver to alter the RPM held by the engine with the clutch depressed. Drop the clutch and, instead of watching your Goodyear F1 Supercar tires go the way of the Dodo, you hook up and take off down the drag strip.
Or, ya know, you could turn the system off and smoke bomb your neighborhood. See examples of both launch techniques in the video below, because whenever a video starts off with a prominent disclaimer, you know it's going to be good.

Official: Audi R8 E-Tron laps 'Ring in record-setting 8:09, celebrates silently
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Audi, Electric, Luxury
Two months ago, the Audi R8 E-Tron was caught at the Nürburgring, getting its gumption up for what everyone has come to consider The Obligatory Timed Lap of Destiny. The lap has been completed with Markus Winkelhock at the wheel, and the result is a world record for a series production electric car: eight minutes and 9.099 seconds. If you believe in Wikipedia's list of 'Ring lap times, that puts the R8 E-Tron with its 375 horsepower and stupefying torque 25 seconds behind the R8 V10, five seconds adrift of the eight-cylinder R8, and in the same company as the Audi RS4 and previous generation BMW M6.
If we ignore the fact that you can't buy an R8 E-Tron yet, the hot lap car "corresponds in every detail" to the one you will be able to buy at the end of this year. Well, not exactly: customer cars will be speed-limited to 200 kph (125 mph), but for the 'Ring run, the limiter was raised to 250 kph. More practical numbers for civilian jaunts are the 0-to-62 mph time of 4.6 seconds and a 134-mile range when fully charged.
More important to all of us will be the video footage of its triumph, which we hope to see very soon. In the meantime, there's the obligatory press release of destiny below.

First Drive: 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT
Filed under: Budget, Hatchback, Hyundai, First Drives
Adding More Fun And Function To A Winning FormulaTruth be told, we've always had a soft spot for the Hyundai Elantra Touring. Rather than being just another compact hatchback, the Touring was a bona fide small wagon - the sort of thing commonly reserved for the European market. It was a less-expensive alternative to the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen with an impressive warranty, though its milquetoast demeanor and somewhat odd styling never really made it a hit with the masses.
Nowadays, also-ran status is absolutely unacceptable for Hyundai, especially with anything in the Elantra family. After all, the compact sedan was named the 2012 North American Car of the Year and has been selling like hotcakes ever since it launched. So when we got word that a successor to the Elantra Touring would be on deck, out interest was indeed piqued.
Well, here it is - the 2013 Elantra GT. And while it's wholly different than the Elantra Touring that came before it, Hyundai hopes that its new GT will appeal to the buying public in a much larger way, even besting stiff competition from the likes of class-favorites like the Ford Focus and Mazda3.
This new five-door certainly has a lot riding on its (hatch)back. But does it deliver? We hit the roads outside of San Diego to find out.

Official: Ford SVT Raptor gets beadlock wheels, HIDs for 2013
Filed under: Truck, Ford, Off-Road
In addition to the standard and new Limited models, Ford's freshening of the 2013 F-150 has extended to the no-job-too-big SVT Raptor, as well. Look closely and you'll see the new (optional) high-intensity discharge headlamps, the special beadlock wheels available through Ford Racing and the brand-new exterior color, called Terrain. (No, not that Terrain.)
About those wheels: Ford Racing will offer a beadlock ring kit as an option to SVT Raptor buyers. For serious off-roaders, this type of wheel is immensely helpful when the going gets rough. As Ford puts it:
The Raptor's interior gets a slight tweak for 2013, as well, with the addition of a 4.2-inch multifunction LCD screen in the instrument cluster that's paired with the automaker's MyFord Touch infotainment system, still housed in the eight-inch screen on the center console. The powertrain has remained the same, but that's just fine - we're perfectly happy with the 6.2-liter V8, pumping out 411 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque.Beadlock wheels secure the edges of a tire to the wheel between two surfaces so the tire is unlikely to roll off the rim if it's aired down to very low pressure, providing extra grip on the trail.
Scroll down for the full details in the press blast.

Video: Ken Block releases barge-tastic Gymkhana 5 trailer
Filed under: Motorsports, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Hatchback, Ford, Celebrities, Racing
Ken Block is a talented man, no doubt about it. Though we wish - and we're sure he'd wholeheartedly agree - that his talents led to a few major race wins, Block is nothing if not an effective marketer of his own brand. And, as any budding internet video machine (over 140 million YouTube views for Block's Gymkhana series) can tell you, a web video is hardly a web video unless it's first been teased.
And so we bring you the video below. Yes, it's a teaser for Block's upcoming Gymkhana 5 video. Yes, it stars Ken Block and his Ford Fiesta H.F.H.V. rally car. And, if you couldn't tell from the screen capture above, it all takes place on a barge in San Francisco Bay. If you don't care about any of that, perhaps you'll be swayed to watch when we tell you it's all set to the glorious tunes of Europe's "The Final Countdown."
The video is waiting for your prying eyes below. It's 37 seconds long, and only about 10 of those show Block's car in motion. So, um... enjoy? And stay tuned for the whole shebang on July 9.

First Drive: 2013 Ford Focus ST
Filed under: Performance, Hatchback, Ford, First Drives
Screaming Yellow ZonkerWe're having a strong sense of déjà vu, and it isn't just because we find ourselves in Southern France. Yes, we've driven these very roads that drape over the region's Edenic mountains like doctors' signatures several times before. They're some of the best in the world, replete with tight switchbacks bookending snaking climbs and descents interrupted only by the occasional masochistic cyclist or tour bus. The Mediterranean vistas don't exactly suck, either.
We've even navigated some of these routes around Nice in a performance-minded Ford Focus. Two years ago, Blue Oval operatives brought us to this same area for an early drive of their C-Max people mover, spicing up the trip by giving us a short stint behind the wheel of their then-new Focus RS500, a limited edition matte-black monster marshaling a scarcely believable 345 horsepower and 338 pound-feet of torque through the front wheels. Today, though, our 2013 Ford Focus ST driving companion is toned-down but no less outré thanks to its Tangerine Scream paint.
Compared to the RS500, the ST drops a cylinder in favor of a less powerful 2.0-liter EcoBoost four generating 252 hp and 270 lb-ft. Fortunately, it's also a lot less costly, starting from just $24,495 delivered - a price that shades the far less powerful 200-hp, five-door Volkswagen GTI ($25,365). In fact, the ST is nearly as powerful as the Golf R while offering more torque (VW's all-wheel drive hot hatch registers 256 hp/243 lb ft) for a lot less money - the R starts around $35k. Subaru's AWD WRX is an interesting option, too, with more power (265 hp) but less torque (244 lb-ft) for more money ($26,345). The ST's closest natural rival, however, is the Mazdaspeed3 - ironic, as it rides atop the last-generation Focus' platform. The Mazda carries a marginally bigger stick, though: 263 ponies and 280 torques, coming in at $24,795.

Report: NHTSA opens investigations on Chrysler 200 and Ford Explorer
Filed under: Sedan, Safety, Crossover, Chrysler, Ford
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened new investigations concerning the Chrysler 200 and Ford Explorer. All of the vehicles in question are from the 2011 model year, with 87,000 200s and 83,000 Explorers being investigated.
NHTSA's Chrysler investigation concerns possible stalling problems, with the organization stating that it has received 15 complaints of the 200's 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 stalling. "All 15 incidents reported stalling without warning during low-speed decelerations such as braking for a stop sign or traffic light," NHTSA's official release states. This investigation does involve both the sedan and convertible models.
No accidents have been linked to either the Ford or Chrysler issues."Some of the complaints indicated observing a power steering warning message when the failure occurred. In some cases, the condition was corrected by turning the vehicle off and restarting. However, some reports indicate the condition returned after restart."
Keep in mind, these investigations are not recalls - merely a way for NHTSA to probe a certain model and determine if an official recall is actually necessary. Click here and here to read both of the NHTSA investigation reports.

Official: Skoda recreates Stonehenge out of old cars
Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, UK, Skoda
The UK has a burgeoning car market filled with all sorts of cars we don't get here. So to get buyers' attention, automakers need to make a real splash. To that end, Skoda has erected a fresh take on one of the island nation's oldest landmarks... only in a more automotive form.
Dubbed Citihenge, the installation is inspired by the ancient Stonehenge in Wiltshire, recreated out of old cars. It was built over the course of three months under the direction of renowned installation artist Tommy Gun, and put in place in less than 12 hours. Using eighteen scrap cars weighing a total of 36 metric tons, each of the henges measures five meters tall by five meters wide and is made to withstand force-12 hurricane winds. Still, it can be entirely recycled.
The installation was erected on the south bank of the Thames next to London's famous Tower Bridge just in time for the summer solstice, and marks the arrival of the Skoda Citigo (the Czech version of the Volkswagen Up!) in the British market.
