Official: DOE rejects $310M loan for Carbon Motors to build advanced police cars
Filed under: Sedan, Government/Legal, Police/Emergency
Carbon Motors, maker of the purpose-built E7 police car, won't receive the $310 million in U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) loans under the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) program that it applied for almost three years ago, and said that it's a victim of politics.
"We are outraged by the actions of the DOE and it is clear that this was a political decision in a highly-charged, election year environment," Carbon Motors William Santana Li said in a statement. The company added that it was "actively examining its strategic and financing alternatives."
Carbon Motors says its vehicles will save government entities money because they get better fuel economy and they're purpose-built, meaning that factory vehicles don't need to be retrofitted. Carbon Motors has said its diesel-powered cars may cut law-enforcement fuel use and greenhouse-gas emissions by as much as 40 percent, and that building such cars may create as many as 10,000 jobs. The car was to feature a BMW 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine.
The company says it's received about $200 million worth of financial commitments from private and public sources and has taken orders from more than 500 law-enforcement agencies for more than 20,000 cars.
Last December, the company sent an open letter urging the Obama Administration to push the DOE to approve the loan.
The federal loan process has vexed other automotive companies. Bright Automotive, which was to make extended-range plug-in utility vehicles, publicly pleaded with the government to process its application for a $400 million loan in January. Last month, that company went out of business.
Meanwhile, Fisker Automotive, maker of the extended-range plug-in sports sedan Karma, has been fielding questions about its future after the company in early February laid off workers. Fisker has received less than $200 million of the $529 million loan it was slated to get from the DOE.

Geneva: 2012 Maserati GranTurismo Sport won't make you blue
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Geneva Motor Show, Maserati, Luxury
A replacement for the aging GranTurismo is still a few years out, so in an effort to keep the model line fresh, Maserati has released this all new Sport trim here at the Geneva Motor Show. Essentially replacing the GranTurismo S, the Sport falls directly in between the base car and the hardcore MC.
The most significant change is a boost in power from the 4.7-liter naturally aspirated V8. This free-breathing engine now produces 460 horsepower - up from 434 - which now puts it at the top of the GranTurismo power range. Of course, that means we can expect a more powerful MC to debut in the near future.
Exterior changes include a more aggressive front fascia with large air intakes flanking the pronounced grille. Additionally, the headlamps and taillamps have been smoked and LED running lights have been incorporated into the GT's eyes. Inside, there are new sport seats and a revised steering wheel.
It may ride on old bones, but the new GranTurismo Sport's enhancements are enough to keep the giant coupe exciting for the near term.

Exclusive: Turn 10 talks Forza Motorsport 4 Porsche DLC with Autoblog
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Etc., Technology, Videos, Porsche, Toys/Games, Celebrities, Luxury
Turn 10 Studios made some big waves when the video game developer announced it had finally come to an agreement with Porsche and EA Games over a licensing deal that would see the German sports cars make it into the Forza Motorsport 4 universe. Autoblog recently sat down with Dan Greenawalt, the director of Turn 10 studios, for a quick chat about the Porsche DLC, Forza Horizon, the new level cap for Forza Motorsport 4 and the relationship between Forza and Gran Turismo.
Autoblog: Porsche has been pretty territorial about licensing their products in terms of video games. How did the Porsche expansion pack play out? How did you make it happen?
Dan Greenawalt: Well, many many years ago Porsche and EA Games signed a long-term deal regarding how Porsche was going to be licensed. That deal has been resigned many times over the years. Because of the nature of that deal, EA has the exclusive rights and the discretion to sub-license Porsche as they see fit.
Porsche has been in the last three Forza Motorsports through a sub-licensing deal with EA. For Forza Motorsport 4 we were not able to find terms that were agreeable to all parties, but we stayed at the table. It took some time to value the brand in such a way that everyone agreed.
Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini are kind of like the holy trinity of auto brands. They pull in a lot of people. They have prestige around the world. Finding that value and agreeing on that value is really what it came down to.
Hit the jump to continue reading the conversation.

Video: Watch this rolling cliché of motorcycle drifting, stunting, fast cars and hot models
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Nissan, Motorcycle, Specialty
If you film it, they will watch.
Apparently, a video featuring a heavily modified Graves Motorsports Yamaha R1 ridden by stunt rider Bill Dixon isn't enough of a draw to attract the easily wandering eyes of the YouTube crowd. So, in addition to the blacked-out bike, which Dixon describes as "the epitome of badass," the film crew also brought along a couple cars, all of them black, including a Stillen-modified Nissan GT-R and some sort of supercharged-Hemi-powered police car.
Not enough? Fine. How about aerial shots from a helicopter and a couple of leggy models named Angela and Destiny, dressed in both impossibly skimpy (NSFW!) bikinis and Holloween-ready police girl outfits?
Yep, this video's got all the chichéd stereotype boxes checked. All that's left to do is watch. You'll find it after the break... and remember, it's probably best not to do so at work.

Geneva: Carrozzeria Touring Disco Volante concept revealed early
Filed under: Concept Cars, Performance, Geneva Motor Show, Alfa Romeo, Design/Style, Luxury
Coachbuilder Carrozzeria drew heavily from the Touring Disco concept it created for Alfa in 1952. The boattail-like rear window and tiny twin taillights are direct descendants of the 60-year-old muse. Same goes for the long hood, short rear deck proportions that just scream speed.
Beneath the sexy skin is an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, including its 443-horsepower, 4.7-liter V8 and six-speed tranny.
Looking to add a Disco Volante to your harem of supercars? Get in line. Quickly. Carrozzeria says it will build only a few for the very wealthy who probably aren't you.

Report: GM shutting down Chevy Volt production for five weeks
Filed under: Hybrid, Sedan, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Plants/Manufacturing, Chevrolet, GM, Electric
Even with the new HOV-eligible 2012 Chevrolet Volt models heading to California and sales up in February, General Motors has reportedly decided to shut down production of the plug-in hybrid for five weeks because of overall sluggish sales. With a 150-day supply of Volts sitting on dealer lots around the country, this shutdown will temporarily lay off 1,300 employees.
What's perhaps even more interesting is that this production hiatus comes after a lengthy "holiday" retooling break that only ended in early February. The upcoming shutdown is scheduled to last from March 19 to April 23. As a GM spokesman told MLive, "We're matching our production levels with demand and building to market."

Video: Nissan teases Altima ahead of New York debut
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Sedan, Videos, Nissan
With the New York Auto Show one month away, 'tis the season to tease the next big thing. For Nissan, that "big thing" is the 2013 Altima. The Altima is by far Nissan's best selling vehicle here in the U.S., and the long-running sedan is in dire need for a fresh new face.
To tease the Altima, the creative types at Nissan decided to eschew the darkened or obscured photograph in favor of, well, a darkened and obscured video. Oh, and the video last all of eight seconds, and four of those ticks are reserved for the Nissan logo. The brief glimpse reveals a sky shot of the Altima that shows off some elegant curves and pronounced headlight fixtures.
The YouTube description adds that the new sedan boasts "a low, wide stance and sculpted profile that makes for quite a dynamic appearance." That's not a lot to go on, but Nissan hopes you'll hit the jump and watch the video anyway.
