As Clara Heyworth’s Killer Walks, Judge Questions Prosecutors in Her Case

As expected, criminal charges against the driver who fatally struck Brooklyn pedestrian Clara Heyworth have been dropped. Unexpected was a critique of the case from the bench, as a judge today lambasted prosecutors for abandoning efforts to bring a suspected DWI killer to justice.

SRF Challenge Draws Big Numbers for Week 1

The numbers are in, and it looks like the new SpecRacer Ford Challenge series may have set some attendance records in its inaugural week, drawing in some VERY strong numbers. How strong? In terms of attendance numbers among the non-Rookie series, the D-Class SpecRacer Ford Challenge was the #2 series for Week 1 of Season 3, 2012, weighing-in with 724 different drivers participating throughout the course of the week, which puts it right behind the Skip Barber series, which featured 937 different drivers participating for Week 1. In terms of overall participation numbers for Week 1, including the Rookie-class series, the SpecRacer Ford Challenge still weighted-in at #3, coming in behind the Rookie-class Mazda Cup (fixed) series with 2,323 different Rookie and D-Class drivers participating, and then the aforementioned Skip [...]

Official: Audi Cam is like YouTube for UK service bays

Audi UK has introduced the Audi Cam, a new - and for owners, hopefully more informative and reliable - way to interact with service advisors and technicians. After a car is dropped off, technicians will use a Flip-like camera to videotape and provide audio commentary for any issues diagnosed. Each problem gets its own clip to keep file sizes small, then the video is uploaded to a private, PIN-coded page just for the owner.

The owner can then watch the video (or videos) with each repair ranked from 'For Info' to 'Urgent' and attached with out-the-door pricing. The owner can agree to or decline selected repairs or follow up with a phone call from the same page. There's even a profile section in case you'd like to get to know Buford, the gent who'll be getting grubby working on your car.

This is on top of the Audi Cam introduced to the UK two years ago, which hooked up technicians with two-way radios and cameras that streamed video while they worked, so that customers in the waiting room could speak to and watch the repairs being made in real time. This goes beyond the lobby, and we look forward to seeing how this shapes up in practice. For now, there's a press release below with more details.

2013 Buick Verano Turbo - moving three-quarter view

The 2013 Buick Verano Turbo goes on sale this fall and General Motors has just announced that the boosted sedan will be priced from $29,990 (*including $885 for destination).

That base price gets you niceties like IntelliLink, a Bose audio system, heated leather seats, and a whole host of safety features including a rearview camera, blind spot alert and cross-traffic alert. A six-speed manual transmission is available as a no-cost option (hurrah!), and the only other available upgrades are a sunroof and navigation.

For comparison's sake, a similarly equipped Verano with the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine costs $26,850, including destination.

Under the hood of the Verano Turbo is GM's 2.0-liter forced-induction four that we've sampled in the larger Regal, good for 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The EPA just recently released fuel economy figures for the Verano Turbo, and the baby Buick is estimated to achieve 20/31 miles per gallon (city/highway).

Scroll down for the official pricing release.

Rossi denies his mind is made up

Valentino Rossi denies he has decided to call time on his Ducati career, saying the lure of winning on three different manufacturers still appeals to him. The Italian has become the central figure in the 2012 silly season, with offers from both the works Ducati and Yamaha squads. Despite his admission at Laguna Seca that he was struggling for motivation with the Desmosedici, he said that he is still yet to make a decision - insisting that competitive machinery, rather than money, will be the key factor in his decision.

iRacing Satisfies Need for Speed With New Street Stock Series

When the topic of “stock car racing” comes up in a conversation, what’s the first image that comes to mind? More often than not, it’s usually a NASCAR great such as Dale Earnhardt and his famous #3 Chevrolet. A common misconception which people hold who may not follow motorsports is that the NASCAR acronym actually holds the same weight it carried years ago, when it truly was the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. Much has changed over the course of NASCAR’s existence, and many debate how far NASCAR has strayed from the path of what it was founded on. The “Race on Sunday – Sell on Monday” ideal is quite difficult to follow when consumer-friendly cars such as the Impala, Fusion, or Charger don’t even look like their [...]

Report: Ghost Coupe to be fastest Rolls-Royce ever

Autocar has snapped spy shots of a Rolls-Royce Ghost Coupe, and judging from proportions the car will be so long in front and raked in back that it would make Dick Tracy whistle. We'll get the true story on that at next year's Geneva Motor Show, which is when Autocar says it's due to be revealed, but what's less in question is this: with a 6.6-liter, 600-horsepower V12 and a tauter ride it will be the fastest Rolls-Royce ever.

Weight is estimated to drop by 200 kg compared to its sedan sibling, and its roofline to drop by up to nearly three inches. If the horsepower numbers are correct the shorter and lighter Ghost coupe, with a 69-hp bump over the sedan, will assuredly deliver the "considerably brisker" acceleration promised. Helping matters will be the lowered chassis, larger tires, "mildly sports-orientated" brakes and a suspension tuned to be more aggressive but delivering just as much waftability.

Although it's being called the Ghost Coupe for now, insiders have suggested to the magazine that that it will get its own, bespoke, name, with pricing above the standard sedan but below the extended-wheelbase sedan.

Report: AM General to offer civilian Humvee kit car

AM General Humvee in camo paint and on boulders

For anyone feeling nostalgic about the passing of the Hummer brand, or the actual wartime vehicle that inspired it, now is your chance to own a version of the original HMMWV, albeit without an engine.

After a 12-year hiatus from the civilian vehicle market, AM General is reportedly set to offer a kit-car of the C-Series Humvee. The kit will conform to U.S. government regulations and has been made possible by a deal with General Motors.

The kit costs $59,000 - and you still need an engine. A likely favorite would be a Duramax Diesel V8 and Allison transmission combination, as was found on the H1 Alpha. AM General estimates that an owner could buy the kit Humvee and outfit a powerplant and transmission for $75,000. Not bad, considering that H1 Alpha has an MSRP of $140,000 in 2005.

How is this possible? If you recall, GM was trying to unload the Hummer brand to Chinese-based Sichuan-Tengzhong, among other suitors. As we all know, a deal never happened and the brand rumbled off into the sunset. The deal with AM General worked so that the military Humvee producer could offer a vehicle to the public as long as it was fundamentally different from the H1. By offering a kit car, they apparently end-around much of the legal confines.

But that also means are other setbacks. The final product will not look like the civilian Hummer H1, and it will not have niceties like interior trim, power locks, door mounted mirrors, or even hard doors. It will simply be a four-seat, soft-top, soft door vehicle. AM General will offer 'add-on' factory options such as the Central Tire Inflation System, rocker protection, and potentially two-piece beadlock wheels.

As the story over at Hummer Guy puts it, "just remember - its a Humvee, not a Hummer."

Video: You can catch more flies with a Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz art car covered in flies

The intersection of automobiles and art is always an interesting locale, and one french sculptor has spiced things up a bit with a Mercedes-Benz covered in flies. The premise sounds a bit shaky to be sure, but artist Natacha Mercier says the concept was inspired by something she witnessed back in 2007. While standing on a side street, she saw a BMW owner drive up, park and get out of the car. Clad all in white and with plenty of gold chains around his neck, the driver then proceeded to spit-polish a spot on his chrome wheels. According to Mercier, the girls around him (including herself) were "dropping like flies" while he strutted around like a peacock.

Mercier decided to turn the situation on its ear with this project. Mercier coated an old Merc in fly paper, parked it a greenhouse and released 100,000 flies. When the body was fully coated in insects, the artist, her brother and two friends piled in to drive around the streets of Toulouse, France. The mixed media artist is no stranger to working on auto-related subjects - she previously dressed up a Mercedes in a wedding gown and is now working on a new piece involving an Opel Corsa.

Check out the bizarre scene in the videos below.

Auctions: George Clooney auctioning off his Tesla Roadster for charity

George Clooney's Tesla Roadster

Gooding & Company's Pebble Beach auction set for next month just got a little more interesting, with George Clooney's very own Tesla Roadster added to the docket. Finished in Obsidian Black Metallic paint, Clooney's Tesla is number eight of the original "Signature 100" built in 2008 and comes with the premium two-tone leather interior.

Clooney isn't selling the electric roadster to get some extra cash, though. The Academy Award-winning actor is well known for his philanthropic exploits, and the full proceeds from the auction will be given to one of his charities, the Satellite Sentinel Project. Co-founded by Clooney and human rights activist John Prendergast, the non-profit organization aims to prevent a return to civil war between Northern and Southern Sudan.

"We admire and respect Mr. Clooney's talent and dedication to making a difference in our international community, and hope his fantastic car will attract great support for the Satellite Sentinel Project and recognition of the lives his work saves every day," said company president David Gooding.

The auction house estimates the value of the Tesla Roadster at $100,000 to $125,000. Scroll down to read the official announcement from Gooding & Company.

Porsche 918 Spyder in Martini racing livery - overhead front three-quarter shot

As much as Gulf Racing livery may be synonymous with the Porsche 917, Martini racing is an equally famous Porsche sponsor of years gone by. The livery has adorned both 911 and 917, and now, its graced upon the all-new 918 hybrid supercar.

We had seen spy shots of the 918 in classic race guise at the Nürburgring, but here are the first official photos from Porsche. With permission from Martini owner Bacardi & Company of Switzerland, the German automaker has grafted the iconic livery onto its high-performance green machine.

Martini has been involved with auto racing since as far back as 1968, sponsoring a Formula Two race at the Hockenheimring, and their first support of Porsche came in 1969, entering two 907s in several races. It was a Martini-liveried 917LH that won the 1971 Le Mans 24 Hours, but it was not until 1973 that Martini became a factory partner of Porsche. That partnership lasted until 1978, and during that time, Martini-shod cars won the Targa Florio in '73, the Sports Car World Championship in '76, and Le Mans in '76 and '77.

The red, white and two-shades-of-blue could be found on almost every racing Porsche of the 70s, including the 908, 917, 935, 936 and 911 RS and RSR models.

Hopefully Porsche brings the 918, in standard or RSR form, to the motorsport world. If so, though, it's probably unlikely that the plug-in hybrid supercar will wear a livery as tied to the brand's heritage as a company that makes vermouth.

Down Claims Title #4 as van Gisbergen Wins Finale

Round 12 and the season finale of the iRacing.com V8 Supercars Series presented by BigPond was held in England at a 4.2km roller coaster of a race track known as Brands Hatch.  Madison Down had all but secured the online racing championship heading into this round and with ANZ Motorsport securing the team championship in the first race of the week, the remaining events were a show for the feature. Shane van Gisbergen snatched pole position from team mate Justin Ruggier with a 1:26.846 as Down posted third fastest time with Scott McLaughlin and Richard Hamstead starting out of fourth and fifth for the main race. Van Gisbergen got the jump on everyone into Paddock Bend while Ruggier fell in behind his team mate with Down trying hard to pass.  [...]
