Raikkonen: Bahrain podium possible

Kimi Raikkonen is confident his Lotus team will be quick enough to fight for a podium at the Bahrain Grand Prix after his near-miss in China - and the Enstone squad reckons its upgrades should also work better at Sakhir than at Shanghai. Raikkonen was running second going into the closing stages in China, but the strategy of pitting twice with a very long final stint backfired. As his tyres faded, Raikkonen tumbled right back to 14th

Official: Ford introduces cargo van version of Transit Custom

Ford Transit Custom Cargo Van

European buyers now know what to expect from the Ford Transit Custom cargo van. The work version of the van bowed at the Birmingham Commercial Vehicle Show this week with the new exterior and more refined cabin that first appeared on the Ford Tourneo Custom passenger van.

Buyers outside of North America will be able to choose between a short wheelbase version with a total length of 16.3 feet or a long wheelbase configuration that spans 17.5 feet from stem to stern. Indoors, the van can deliver up to 212 cubic feet of cargo area, or three european pallets stacked three-feet high. In addition, the floor offers enough space between the wheel wells to accommodate a 4x8 sheet of material.

The Transit Custom isn't headed to the North American market, though, which begs the question: Why do we care? Ford is set to replace the aging E-Series with a different Transit van that's specific to our continent, though that vehicle will be based on the global Transit Custom we see here. According to Ford, our van will yield 25-percent better fuel economy than the current E-Series thanks to either the same Ecoboost 3.5-liter V6 currently found in the nose of the F-150 or a diesel powerplant. The North American Transit is also supposed to weigh in 300 pounds less than its predecessor.

Rahal put on probation for clash

Ganassi driver Graham Rahal has been placed on probation for the next six events after a post-race investigation found him to be responsible for the accident that took himself and Marco Andretti out of Sunday's IndyCar race in Long Beach. Andretti was attempting to pass Rahal on lap 22 when Rahal appeared to move over slightly on the Andretti Autosport car, resulting in Andretti running into Rahal's right-rear wheel and being launched into the air. "Due to the inability of the #38 car to continue the race, a review of the on-track actions of Graham Rahal became a post-race issue," said Beaux Barfield, IndyCar president of competition and series race director.

Wheels of destruction

There's nothing unusual about vehicles in first-person shooters - Rage has its Jetter and Cuprino, Battlefield 3 has two entire classes of wheeled vehicles - but there's usually still a person involved. But what about when your vehicle is your shooter? Then you have the PS3 game Wheels of Destruction World Tour, which is essentially Death Race 2 without the felons and bad acting.

There are three classes in the arcade-style game: Scout, Heavy and Assassin. Your job is to pilot one of them in "death matches, free-for-alls, and capture-the-flag frenzies." The goal seems simple: "battle to crush opponents, slaying everything in your path of relentless devastation, both online and off."

And don't forget high scores. There are a couple of gameplay and instructional vids after the jump.

Quick Spin: 2012 Audi A6 Allroad Quattro biturbo diesel

Don't Get Too Attached To This Larger Allroad

2012 Audi A6 Allroad Quattro

As an American living in Italy, there are often entire month-long stretches where I drive nothing but European cars that will sadly never come out to play on American soil. Such is the case for the abundantly adored Audi A6 Allroad Quattro seen here. I was initially of the assumption that since the A4 Allroad had already been confirmed for the U.S. that the A6 Allroad would be coming as well, but I am dismayed to report otherwise.

Such a pity, too. The business case for giving North America the whole range of Audi models that Germany offers apparently just doesn't pan out financially - and for some of us, it's the old predictable story of unrequited love across the chilly Atlantic.

Team Ingolstadt brought me into their home in Neckarsulm just north of hilly Stuttgart for this drive through the area's precisely cultivated fields of hops. The aroma of beer is everywhere here, which may go some way toward explaining just why the new A6 Allroad felt so good under and around me as we freight-trained along the Swabian two-lanes.
