Fiat Readies Seven-Seat 500XL, Patent Drawings Show

When Fiat’s five-door 500L debuted last February, the best excuse for the company would have been to claim an epidemic of cryptomnesia in the design studio. Syncing Traffic Lights No Sure-Fire Way to Reduce Emissions

From a motorist’s perspective, few things are more frustrating than sitting at a red light when the lights ahead are all green. That would help explain the popularity of traffic signal synchronization, neatly timing lights so that someone traveling the speed limit can expect to wait only every several cycles.
Many communities have seized on synchronization [...]

iRacing Satisfies Need for Speed With New Street Stock Series

When the topic of “stock car racing” comes up in a conversation, what’s the first image that comes to mind? More often than not, it’s usually a NASCAR great such as Dale Earnhardt and his famous #3 Chevrolet. A common misconception which people hold who may not follow motorsports is that the NASCAR acronym actually holds the same weight it carried years ago, when it truly was the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. Much has changed over the course of NASCAR’s existence, and many debate how far NASCAR has strayed from the path of what it was founded on. The “Race on Sunday – Sell on Monday” ideal is quite difficult to follow when consumer-friendly cars such as the Impala, Fusion, or Charger don’t even look like their [...]

Overtaking Discipline

I want to spend some time talking about overtaking discipline, and what I believe are the essentials to preserving your (and others’) safety rating and ultimately having an enjoyable iRacing experience. First of all, it’s pretty safe to say that iRacing’s Mazda MX-5 Cup series is an ideal place for newbies and oldies alike to learn how to overtake properly. Things happen much slower in the Mazda than they would in, say, the Corvette C6.R (I’m stating the obvious… but you get what I mean). Additionally, the fixed setup in this series removes any effects that a change in setup would have on the balance of your car – basically you are forced to drive the same Mazda every time (again, stating the obvious but it’s important to note for [...]

Auctions: New Zealand dealership honors $1 Buy-it-Now price

BMW 3 Series E36

You've probably heard of more than a few eBay or Craigslist specials that sound too good to be true; "Buy it for just $1- today only!" More often than not, its a ruse, luring you in for a far less inciting, yet more realistic transaction. If you are Stadium Cars, you wish it were the latter, but a mistake on its part led to a BMW being sold for just $1. An employee at Stadium Cars in New Zealand listed a 1994 320i online for auction. The reserve, and thus the "Buy it Now" price? Just $1. At that price, it was scooped up in seconds.

Stadium Cars manager Mike Nokes said that while a car is listed with a $1 reserve every week, the "Buy it Now" option was accidentally activated. Thus, a user by the name of "bignz" was able to purchase the 1994 BMW 320i that otherwise would likely have sold in the $3,000 range. Sure, it's not nearly a brand-new car, but who'd turn down that deal?

Unsurprisingly, it was the cheapest sale of a car in the history of the dealership. At the point, one may surmise that the dealer would embark on legal action to get out of the sale, but according to Nokes, "We are firm believers in the auction process and for it to be fair to buyers and sellers alike." In this case, it seems that the buyer made out with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Video: Nissan recalls the birth of Miss Fairlady

Miss Fairlady

The emphasis in the title is the word "Miss" - this isn't about the Datsun Fairlady (that eventually became the line of Z cars still going today), but the women who were hired to help sell them. Introduced as a concept to accompany a marquee dealership in Tokyo's chic Ginza area, the five Miss Fairladys were given product training so they could answer customer questions, a new thing at the time.

Nissan has made a neat little vid on the beginnings of Miss Fairlady, and it includes an interview with a Miss Fairlady from the early 1970s as well as her daughter, who is the Chief Miss Fairlady in Tokyo and Yokohama today.
